PoE is an ideal solution for smart building

Smart buildings need to connect in series many devices and systems including security monitoring, lighting, air conditioning, etc., involving complex data and power transmission wiring, so as to ensure the stable operation of the systems. Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology can transmit power and data to devices through twisted pair at the same time, so it can greatly reduce the complexity of system construction, reduce the cost of construction and improve the efficiency of operations. This article will show you the latest technology development of PoE and related product solutions launched by onsemi.

PoE has technological advantages and the market development potential is amazing

After years of technical evolution, PoE has introduced three standards, which can be divided into IEE802.3af (15W), IEE802.3at (30W) and IEE802.3bt (90W) according to the supported power. PoE is used to supply power and transmit data for smart building application systems. Since manpower costs are not required, it has the advantages of easy installation, and reduced capital expenditure and operating costs.

For wired smart equipment (such as lighting, security devices, etc.), PoE technology can greatly reduce the complexity of system construction, and meet international safety standards. For certain equipment far away from the power outlet, such as Wi-Fi access points, Femtocells, Picocells, etc., PoE technology has more advantages, and can build centralized standby power supply (such as UPS), which can run continuously during power failure. The use of PoE technology will achieve great benefits.

Depending on the power supply mode, PoE can be divided into Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Device (PD), and the market is growing rapidly. According to the market analysis made by Global Markets Insights, taking the US market as an example, the PSE equipment of PoE in 2018 was USD 110 million, which is expected to grow to USD 300 million by 2025. PD equipment is expected to grow from USD 175 million in 2018 to USD 400 million in 2025. The market development potential is extremely amazing.

Support higher power to meet more diverse application requirements

The IEEE802.3bt standard officially launched in October 2018 and adopts four pairs of power and can provide up to 90W, which further develops PoE applications by supporting more diverse devices, such as Smart Kiosks, POS, and cameras supporting 1080p, PTZ functions and heaters, or Wi-Fi routers supporting 802.11ax standards, LED lighting, TV/digital signage, and computers. It can be widely used in office spaces, residences, industrial applications, museums, universities, public education, government agencies, airports, corporate communications, health care, and other fields.

IEE802.3bt can transmit power on all four data connection lines (960mA/pair), support up to 90W power output, and support finer resolution classification, allowing PSE to better optimize power distribution among multiple PDs, and has backward compatibility. IEEE802.3bt also has the Maintain Power Signature (MPS) Function. When the MPS of PD does not exist for at least 400 milliseconds, the PSE will recognize the disconnected PD, and at the same time, the PD in sleep mode will generate pulse current (MPS) to avoid triggering the PSE to disconnect, and not consume too much power on the PD.

In addition, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the third major cause of commercial fires in the United States is “electrical and lighting equipment”. Typical root causes include old or defective lines, circuit overload, loose connections, fuse failures, imbalanced electrical loads and many other electrical or lighting problems, which lead to overheating or sparks and may thus lead to fires.

The PoE standard transfers safety control from copper (power supply) to silicon (chips). On the one hand, silicon is much cheaper than copper; on the other hand, we can code silicon chip instead of copper. The equipment adopting PoE technology will be safer and more efficient than the traditional equipment using alternating current directly. However, such advantage of PoE over mains power is often overlooked.

Highly integrated PoE-PD interface controller

For PoE applications, onsemi introduced NCP1095/NCP1096, a PoE-PD interface controller compliant to IEEE.3bt, IEEE 802.3af and/or IEEE 802.3at, which can realize the development of high-power applications such as connected lighting and security cameras, and ensure interoperability among PoE devices. NCP1095/NCP1096 combines all functions in one PoE system, such as detection, classification and current limiting in the inrush phase. NCP1095/NCP1096 uses external pass transistors to provide output voltages of up to 90W. NCP1095/NCP1096 has auxiliary detection pins for applications powered by PoE or wall adapters, and also provides automatic classification support for optimizing power distribution based on PD type and classification. It also provides internal hot-swap FET for higher level of integration (NCP1096).

NCP1095/NCP1096 can be applied to Power over Ethernet Powered Device (PoE-PD) and Internet of Things (IoT). The end products include digital signage, satellite data network, connected lighting, video and VOIP phones, security cameras, pico base stations, multi-band access points, USB Type-C devices, etc.

In order to speed up the product development of customers, onsemi also introduced the NCP1095GEVB/NCP1096GEVB PoE-PD interface controller evaluation board, which can provide customers with the development and evaluation of NCP1095/NCP1096 controllers. The evaluation board also includes a RJ-45 connector, power transformer, active bridge (Greend Bridge2) and other fixtures to help end user with testing. It is the best evaluation tool for developing PoE applications.

Intelligent LED driver supporting indoor positioning technology

Aiming for the intelligent lighting application of smart buildings, onsemi introduced NCL31000 intelligent LED driver, which is a device conforming to the technical specification of YellowDot™ indoor positioning, and has the functions of precise dimming, diagnosis and power measurement. NCL31000 integrates a high-efficiency efficient buck LED driver, supports high-bandwidth analog and PWM dimming to zero current, and also includes two auxiliary DC-DC converters. These are used to power the microcontroller and other sensors. Its built-in diagnostic function can measure input and output current and voltage, LED temperature, and DC-DC voltage. This device is very suitable for YellowDot™ LED driver. In addition, onsemi also introduced the reduced-feature version of NCL31001, which supports multi-channel solutions.

NCL31000 is a high-efficiency buck LED driver, which integrates a 3.3V buck converter, can adjust the voltage from 2.5 to 24V, has an I²C or SPI serial interface, has a high modulation bandwidth (~50kHz), supports Visible Light Communication (VLC), and can send signals to cameras on mobile phones or tablet. Each LED ballast has a unique identifier. When the camera of a mobile phone detects the code, it can indicate the position of the mobile phone in the building with an accuracy of less than 30cm.

NCL31000 can perform deep dimming to zero with an accuracy of 0.1%, support low EMI design, prevent LED short circuit and open circuit, and has IC and LED overtemperature protection, as well as diagnostic functions for measuring voltage and current. NCL 31000 can be used for LED lighting and backlit LED drivers. Common end products include YellowDot™ LED drivers and intelligent LED luminaries.
