When you’re in the market for a Solid State Contactor (SSC) there are many to choose from. But, when you’re in the market for a contactor intended for heating applications you should seriously consider Crydom’s DRH series of solid state contactors. Crydom’s DRH contactors were specifically designed for heating applications. These contactors aren’t simply another flavor in an existing family of contactors. In stark contrast, the DRH contactor was designed from the ground-up with crosshairs on heater applications.
Figure 1. Crydom’s DRH series of solid state contactors
Crydom’s DRH series contactors are power enhanced 3-phase contactors that combine all the advantages of a solid state design along with the simplicity of an electromechanical contactor. This combination has given way to a superior design ideal for demanding heater applications, and, one that is robust, reliable and equally important easy-to-use.
The what, why, and how
What makes it robust? Housed in a compact 45mm IEC style DIN rail package, the DRH series contactor features a higher continuous current rating which is ideal for switching resistive loads such as heaters and lamps. In addition to this high continuous current design, the DRH contactor also provides a high resistance to surge currents up to 716 Amps.
Why is it reliable? The reliability begins with an integrated fan that is controlled using a thermistor and a microprocessor which increases the air flow allowing for greater power in its compact design. In addition, internal over-temperature protection adds to the safety and reliability of this UL listed device. And, as the solid state name implies, these contactors have no moving parts meaning a “wear out” of their output contacts will never occur. With all these reliability features designed in to a single unit, its lifespan will typically be 50 times that of an equivalently rated electromechanical contactor, which makes them ideal for repetitive cycle applications.

How is it easy-to-use? Simply put, the patented enclosed heat sink eliminates the need for protective earth connections, while the multicolor LED (red, green, blue) provides a clear indication of the status of the contactor during operation.

The DRH series offers two product types. The first is the DRH3P60x18, which accepts a load current of up to 18A with 3 controlled legs.

The 2nd product is the DRH3P60x20 , which controls load currents of up to 20A with 2 controlled legs. Both the DRH3P60x18 and the DRH3P60x20 products have an available control voltage of either 90-280 VAC/VDC or 4-32 VDC, and each one has a switching type option of either Zero Voltage Turn-On, or Instantaneous Turn-On.

The DRH contactor series is head-and-shoulders above its competition largely due to its seven main features, including:
1) Output terminals: The output terminals are designed for an easy connection to multiple loads in parallel for a total of up to 20A @600 VAC.
2) Input control: Either DC or AC voltage input control options are available.
3) Over-voltage protection: The built-in over-voltage protection safety feature helps make this product extremely reliable.
4) High temperature alarm: Embedded in this contactor is a high-temperature normally open output alarm (0.5A/200VDC, 120VAC).
5) Visual indication: Multicolor LEDs are a standard feature for the purpose of conveying input status and alarm indication for easy installation and maintenance.
6) Thermal Protection: The incorporated over-temperature protection shuts off the output if the internal temperature exceeds the normal operating limits.
7) Thermal Performance: A patented optimized thermal design and an integrated cooling fan provide superior thermal performance.
The two figures below are helpful in understanding the DRH connection design, options and features of this contactor along with its compact mechanical dimensions.

When you’re looking at contactors for heating applications don’t settle for any garden-variety of contactors. If you want a superior product that offers ease-of-use, extreme reliability, and robustness in terms of both high continuous and surge current ratings, then Crydom’s DRH series of solid state contactors is truly the best product available today.
