New applications for motors propel civilization

Motors are frequently seen and indispensable electrical machine in life. It is applied in all sorts of electronic and mechanical equipment that need propelling power. We can see motors in places from small things such as toys to huge objects such as automobiles and huge machines. For centuries, there has been no big change in the design of a motor. However, with the progress in science and technology, new motors have been designed, in various sizes and with diverse functions, and applied in different corners in daily life.

Motors are important parts in home appliances

In families, motors are always seen as applications in electric fans. At present, most fans are traditional AC electric fans. However, new home electric fans use a brushless DC (BLDC) electric motor. Compared with those AC fans, BLDC fans are higher in efficiency, quieter, and more stable. When it is at 1200rpm, its output power is 15W. Arrow ESC is proud to present you the design of 20W sensor-less BLDC fans. Its electric circuit design is very simple, requiring only two major chips. Therefore, it is a cost effective design. Using an IFX control chip (IRMCK099M) and driver chip (IRSM836), it has a built-in 32-bit MCE computer engine, and a hardware accelerator to support the rotational speed of 150-1200rpm, suitable for use in home electric fans, ventilation fans, low-voltage fan control and more.

The other frequently seen motor is found in popular robotic vacuum cleaners. Arrow ESC has promoted a robotic vacuum cleaner reference design. It uses a BLDC motor that rotates up to 30000rpm. Matched with a 3-cell lithium-ion battery, it supports 12V DC voltage drive. It is a motor control system with high efficiency, low noise, and high stability. Using Allegro’s three-phase BLDC driver A4931, Toshiba’s TPCP8205 MOSFET, and Littelfuse’s diode transient voltage suppressors (TVS) SD15C-01FTG, it supports locking protection, over current protection (OCP), and over temperature protection (OTP). With the features of high operation efficiency and low drive current, its external MOSFET supports 4A drive current. In addition to applying on a robotic vacuum cleaner, this solution can also be applied to air pumps and low-voltage fans.

The motor can also be applied to garage door openers for use in opening/closing garage doors. In most situations, it is used on an opener on a garage wall or in remote control manner. The design kits presented by Arrow ESC use a 150W BLDC motor, matched with an IFX motor control chip (IRMCF183), gate drive (IRS2304STRPBF), and MOSFET main control panel that form a stable and reliable garage door opener. The electric input is 95 to 135 VAC, with a maximum load of 150 pounds. Providing 7-stage speed control, it is equipped with over-current protection, and over-temperature protection. In addition to applying on garage door openers, it is also applicable on lifting tables, compressors, electric fan controls and more.

In addition, in the newly emerged discipline of electric vehicles, as they use battery voltage to control air-conditioning, most of them use 72V batteries. Therefore, it needs a low voltage compressor. Arrow ESC also provides a 70W low-voltage air conditioning compressor reference design. It uses STM M3 as a controller and the built-in operational amplifier can simplify the electric circuit design, with the output current up to 50A. The circuit board supports up to 3500W, to support high-pressure start up, with the capacities of low noise, high efficiency, over current protection, and over temperature protection. It mainly employs the following chips: microcontroller (STM STM32F302), gate driver (STM L6387ED), MOSFET (STM STP200N12F7), DC/DC converter (STM VIPER26), and sensing resistor (Vishay WSLP39214L000FEA). It can be used on low-voltage compressors and electric vehicle compressors.

Mature market for stable development

New applications for new business opportunities

Although the motor is a very mature product, it continues to exist in original market demand. In the latest trend of using technology of low voltage and low power, new applications will promote the market development of new motors, bringing sustaining propelling power to the development of society.
