Device Delivers Fast Switching to Drive Power IGBTs and MOSFETs While Improving System Efficiency

System design engineers for industrial applications are looking for highly integrated gate driving and protection features in a single IC package. The newly developed FOD8334 is an advanced 4.0 A output current IGBT/MOSFET drive optocoupler.

The device’s insulation working voltage rating (VIORM) of 1,414 V is 13 percent higher than the competition, permitting the device to directly drive 1200 V IGBTs. Common Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI) is more than 100 percent better than competitive solutions, while Dynamic Power Consumption per cycle (ESW) during switching is 50 percent less than the competition.

These high voltage parts allow systems of a given power rating to operate at higher voltages and lower currents where the noise filtering becomes less lossy resulting in higher efficiency inverters.

The FOD8334 integrates critical protection features necessary for preventing fault conditions that lead to destructive thermal runaway of IGBTs. It reduces design complexity as most protection features are built-in, eliminating the need for the board designer to specify additional components.

The device utilizes ON Semiconductor’s proprietary Optoplanar® coplanar packaging technology and optimized IC design to achieve high insulation voltage and high noise immunity, characterized by high common mode rejection.

The device is housed in a wide body 16-pin small outline plastic package which delivers high isolation performance in a compact package.

The FOD8334 was developed after customer input and incorporates several features that specifically address the critical challenges they faced. The FOD8343 series from ON Semiconductor is a gate drive optocoupler with a maximum peak output current of 4.0A, which can drive a medium power IGBT/MOSFET. It is ideally suited for motor control inverter applications and the high-speed switch drives of high performance power systems. The FOD8343 series uses a 6-pin stretched body package, which can achieve an 8 mm creepage distance and clearance distance, 0.4 mm insulation distance (FOD8343T) and reliable high voltage insulation. The FOD8343 series is made up of an AlGaAs LED, optically coupled to the integrated circuit, with a high-speed driver for the push-pull type of MOSFET output stage. It optimizes the IC design to achieve reliable high voltage insulation and high noise immunity.

The FOD8343 series uses P-channel and N-channel MOSFETs for the output stage to make the output voltage swing close to the power supply rail. The wide supply voltage range is from 10V to 30V, and the common mode rejection at a minimum 50kV/µs. It can be operated over an extended industrial temperature range from -40°C to 100°C. It achieves fast switching speed throughout the operating temperature range with maximum propagation delay of 210 ns and the maximum pulse width distortion of 65 ns. It meets the UL1577 standard, supporting 1 min 5,000VACRMS, and meeting the DIN EN/IEC60747-5-5 standard, reaching the peak working insulation voltage of 1140V, and satisfy the robustness required by the stringent safety certifications. It acts as an improved and drop-in replacement to other suppliers’ devices at competitive pricing.

High speed logic gate optocouplers

The latest FOD8173 Series, logic gate optocoupler from ON Semiconductor, uses the small 6 pin plastic stretched body package, which is composed of an AlGaAs LED and CMOS detector IC, including an integrated photodiode, high speed transimpedance amplifier, and the voltage comparator with a totem pole output driver. The device can guarantee the electrical and switching characteristics in the VDD range from 3V to 5.5V over an extended industrial temperature range from -40°C to 100°C.

The FOD8173 Series, with an 8 mm creepage distance and clearance distance and 0.4 mm insulation distance (FOD8173T), can achieve reliable high voltage insulation, meeting the safety standards of UL1577 and DIN-EN/IEC60747-5-5. The high speed AlGaAs LED can achieve a high switching speed up to 20 Mbps data rate, with high noise immunity, characterized by common mode transient immunity (CMTI). It has both 3.3V and 5V supply voltages, which facilitates level-logic transfer.

The FOD8173 Series is highly competitive, and its functionality and pin-out are compatible with other suppliers. The device satisfies the robustness required by stringent safety certifications, with the advantages of reliable high voltage insulation, and high noise immunity, and is best suitable for high speed data communication with microprocessor system interfaces (SPI, I2C) and industry fieldbus communications (DeviceNet, CAN, RS485), programmable logic controls, and isolated data acquisition systems.
